If you are puzzled about toners, you are not alone.
I get asked the same question over and over again "What exactly is a toner do?"
Even I sometimes struggle to explain it clearly.
Toners do not have a particularly favourable past, let's blame the '90s, but I can promise that toners have certainly evolved since. A lot has been shifted, changed and added to their formulations and functionality, for the better.
The popularity of toners amongst the consumers, sky-rocketed in the '90s, and with the same speed fell in the 2000s. Think of Clearasil, Clean&Clear and other acne care products.
Once the word "astringent" was a seller, then it became a taboo. Many of us used alcohol-based toners back in the days, rubbing in the stuff across our blemished skins, hoping for a miracle.
The miracle never happened and if anything, triggered more breakouts and sensitivity. Those toners were incredibly drying and not all that great for a face.
These days, toners have improved and got adapted to various skin concerns. The newest generation of toners address almost to every skin concern and are no longer limited to treating only acne and oily skins.
What is a toner?
They look like water but have a handful of active ingredients to help you achieve a complexion you desire. Depending on a toner, it can act like water, i.e providing instant hydration. Other types of toners have exfoliating properties, removing traces of dirt and breaking down skin's unnecessary fat and oil.
At the essence, toner is a quickly absorbed liquid that delivers results efficiently and preps the skin for the next steps.
When should I use a toner?
The idea is to thoroughly cleanse your skin with the cleanser first and then use a toner as the first leave-on step that hydrates and treats. Follow with a serum and moisturiser.
Some toners/ mists can be used throughout the day to refresh and rehydrate.
Are toners really necessary?
Toners are not necessary, but complementary to cleaner and healthier skin. They act as a supplement and enhance skin's radiance.
What does a toner do?
There are toners that are helpful for people with oily or acne-prone skin. Those toners will usually contain a form of BHA (Salicylic Acid) that cleans the inside walls of pores to fight the appearance of blemishes.
For premature ageing, you can use a toner with AHAs (Glycolic Acid) and other hydrating properties- to resurface the skin without stripping its natural oils.
Toners in a form or a Mist or Spritz are great for re-hydrating and calming the skin. These can be used throughout the day to soothe and hydrate the skin in dry climates, in front of the computer, in air-conditioning, when travelling or whenever the skin needs an energising boost.
If you don't have a major concern, your skin can still benefit with a toner for extra cleansing and vitality.
